I am often asked what is unique about Vanderbilt’s programs in education leadership, policy research and organizational development. We have a mission that unifies our research and teaching: to understand and enhance the social, institutional, and organizational contexts in which people learn—schools, universities, and workplace settings among them. We accomplish these goals through conducting research, implementing innovative teaching and training programs, and evaluating and influencing policy.

Spiraling Costs and the Left-Behind Student

Increasing costs and the recession have brought questions of college affordability and access to the forefront of public discussion. William R. Doyle, assistant professor of higher education, receives his share of calls looking for expert commentary on college costs and student aid. Doyle designed the affordability section for the Measuring Up report. His analysis of state aid policies also informed recommendations from the College Board’s Rethinking Student Aid group made last September. » More

Gates Grant Researcher Looks for Keys to Postsecondary Success

Stella Flores, assistant professor of public policy and higher education, will explore barriers to college completion as a co-investigator on a new $1.9 million study funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Postsecondary Success initiative. The initiative’s goal is to double the number of low-income students who earn postsecondary degrees by age 26 -- an increase of approximately 250,000 graduates each year. » More

First University Sponsor of Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program launched this fall by the U.S. Department of State is the newest of the Fulbright programs. The program sends highly accomplished primary and secondary teachers from the U.S. abroad and brings international teachers to the U.S for a year-long program. Vanderbilt was selected as the program's first host University. » More

Coaching Principles for Principals

A unique application of business coaching is building leadership skills among Nashville elementary and middle school principals. Through a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences, a group of Vanderbilt researchers and certified coaches are conducting a randomized field trial of the effects of coaching and systematic feedback on the group. » More

New Book Investigates Slide Back into Segregation

Urban school districts across the country have shifted back to managing segregated schools following the recent lifting of court-ordered desegregation plans, according to a new book edited by Vanderbilt researchers Claire Smrekar and Ellen Goldring. » More
