Barriers and Supports to Engaging in Mental Health Services for Children in a Rural Community
Michael Pullmann, Cheri Hoffman, Sarah VanHooser, Leslie Collins and Craig Anne Heflinger
This study explores the supports and barriers to engagement in services for rural families with children who have serious emotional disturbance. The study was set in Maury County, Tennessee, with families who are or have been involved with the Mule Town Family Network (MTFN), which utilizes a system-of-care framework to create a support system to help children succeed at home, in school and in the community. Collaborating partners expressed an interest in working with researchers to explore family perceptions of MTFN services, in hope that the knowledge gained could be used to increase engagement and retention in services. Because past research identified barriers within families, staff and service systems, the study approached this research from multiple perspectives, including the families that are served by the MTFN, clinical staff, family support staff and administrative staff.
