Information for Students

The HOD internship course is the capstone of the HOD major. It is an opportunity for you to pull together all the lessons from the earlier course work and apply it in an organizational setting—an opportunity to demonstrate that you can "solve human problems in organizations." This is an intensive internship experience worth 15 credit hours for fall/spring and 12 credit hours for summer. It requires a 32-hour-per-week commitment at the internship as well as completion of the 3-hour internship seminar course work.

While your internship experience will allow you to explore possible vocational interests, keep in mind that the primary objective of the internship is academic, not vocational. The seminar course work is designed to reinforce this academic purpose and the bulk of the credit is awarded for this course work.

The curriculum consists of four courses:

• HOD 2900: Internship in Human & Organizational Development—Pass/Fail, 3 (summer) or 6 (fall/spring) credit hours. This includes the credit for the site participation (32 hours per week). Graded deliverables include attendance on site, evaluations, and a site assessment report.
• HOD 2910: Advanced Internship Seminar—3 credit hours. This course assesses the student's ability to: apply self-directed learning skills in an organizational learning situation and to use key theories of human and organizational behavior to understand, evaluate, and respond to personal work experiences. Deliverables include the learning plan and a learning portfolio (evidence of what they have accomplished).
• HOD 2920: Theoretical Applications—3 credit hours. This course assesses students' ability to demonstrate the competencies associated with the analysis portion of the organizational development/action research process. Deliverables include: organizational analysis reports, a S.W.O.T analysis, and business cases.
• HOD 2930: Senior Project—3 credit hours. This course assesses students' ability to demonstrate the problem solving and project management competencies associated with the organizational development/action research process. Deliverables include: senior project proposals, project reports, and the senior project.

Who?
Second semester juniors and seniors who have completed the core HOD courses.

When?
All students must go through the structured internship search strategy process during the semester prior to the internship—even if the student has applied for an internship during a previous semester. HOD students will receive a letter outlining the specific steps required at the beginning of each semester beginning the fall semester of their junior year.

Where?
Prospective interns can choose from seven cities in which to complete their internships:

• Chicago
• London
• Nashville
• New York City
• San Francisco
• Washington, D.C.

Distance Learning applications for cities other than those listed above are considered for unique learning experiences, but primarily for fall and spring semester internships, any considered for summer would have to be opportunities available only in the summer.
