Carrie A. Kortegast holds a doctorate in Education, Leadership, and Policies Studies with a concentration in higher education from Iowa State University, an M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and B.A. from Mount Holyoke College. Professor Kortegast prior professional experiences include serving as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Housing & Residential Life at Denison University, working as a research assistant for RISE‹The Research Institute for Studies in Education at Iowa State University, as well as positions in admissions and alumni affairs.
Professor Kortegast research interests focus on the professional practice of higher education/student affairs administration, the impact of out-of-classroom, social activities on college student learning and development, and LGBTQ issues in higher education. Her dissertation, Picturing Learning: A Visual Ethnography of Social Learning During a Short-term Study Abroad Program, employs a critical framework to discuss student learning and the social practice of U.S. undergraduate study abroad.
For her dissertation, she received the Ping Doctoral Research Fellowship, sponsored by the Counsel on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), which financially supports doctoral research focusing on U.S. undergraduate study abroad.
Professor Kortegast teaches courses on diversity in higher education, student affairs administration, and the practicum course for higher education administration/student affairs master¹s students. Additionally, Professor Kortegast serves on the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) Board. And previously served as the GLBT Issues Knowledge Community Co-Chair as well as on the IV-E Regional Board for NASPA.
