Peabody ranked No. 1 for fourth consecutive year
The Department of Special Education has a rich tradition of excellence in teacher education and is routinely ranked as one of the top training programs in the country. Our four-year degree program is structured to endow you with the necessary skills to assess, plan, and monitor the progress of persons with disabilities. Our program can also lead to licensure for pre-kindergarten to third grade or kindergarten to twelfth grade.
The field experience component is essential to your program of study. Your field experiences will address a range of ages and disability levels including children and/or adults with mental retardation, emotional and behavioral disorders, autism, developmental delays, learning disabilities, hearing impairment, visual impairment, or severe/multiple disabilities.
As a student you will pursue an interdisciplinary major in exceptional learning with an emphasis in one of five specialty areas: mild and moderate disabilities (modified programs), multiple and severe disabilities (comprehensive programs), visual impairment, hearing impairment, or early childhood/preschool. You may also pursue a dual certification program in early childhood or elementary education or combine the special education major with other Peabody majors such as human and organizational development , child development , and cognitive studies , as well as with majors in the College of Arts and Science.
The combination of a rigorous training program and bright, highly skilled graduates has created a great demand for our graduates by school systems throughout the United States.
