Connections between Language, Literacy, and Culture
How are literacy practices shaped by culture?
- Latino Literacies: In this project, Professor Bob Jiménez focuses on improving literacy instruction for Latino students by better aligning the school curriculum with students' linguistic and cultural resources. These resources include students' ability to translate for family members, their ongoing efforts to maintain family ties with individuals living across international boundaries, and their literate participation in youth culture. His work is designed to create instructional tools that build on students' knowledge while at the same time creating links to school-based forms of literacy.
