Mary Louise Hemmeter is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University. She teaches courses, advises students, and conducts research on early childhood issues. Dr. Hemmeter has been involved in a number of research projects and training and technical assistance activities at the localcam and national levels related to effective instruction, promoting children's social emotional development and preventing challenging behavior.
Currently, she is a principal investigator on an OSEP funded field initiated research project on strategies for promoting early literacy skills in preschool children who are at risk and who have disabilities, the Center for the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning, and two IES-funded research projects (one focused on the efficacy of implementing the Teaching Pyramid in classrooms, and the second is investigating three different professional development models for training teachers to use embedded instruction with children with disabilities). In addition, she is a faculty member on the OSEP funded Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Interventions. She is an associate editor of the Journal of Early Intervention and serves on the editorial boards of major journals in early childhood and early childhood special education.
Her research focuses on effective instruction, social emotional development and challenging behavior, and translating research to practice. She recently completed a five-year term on the Division for Early Childhood's Board during which time she served as President.
