Kathleen Lynne Lane, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at Peabody College, where she is also an Investigator in the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development and the Learning Sciences Institute.
She earned her master's degree and doctorate in education from the University of California, Riverside. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Lane served as a classroom teacher of general and special education students for 5 years and provided consultation, intervention, and staff development services to five school districts in Southern California for 2 years as a Program Specialist.
Dr. Lane's research interests focus on school-based interventions (academic and behavioral) with students at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). She has designed, implemented, and evaluated multilevel prevention models in elementary, middle, and high school settings to prevent the development of EBD and respond to existing instances. Dr. Lane is a primary investigator (PI) of Project WRITE, a Goal Area 2 Grant funded through the Institute of Education Sciences that focuses on the impact of writing interventions for students at risk for EBD who are also poor writers. She was also the PI of an Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP)-directed project studying positive behavior support at the high school level and an OSEP field-initiated project studying prevention of EBD at the elementary level. She has expertise in school-based intervention and statistical analysis, including multivariate analysis of longitudinal datasets.
Dr. Lane serves on several editorial boards, including Exceptional Children, the Journal of Special Education, and the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, Education and Treatment of Children, and Remedial and Special Education. She has coauthored three books and published over 80 journal articles and book chapters.
"I begin class promptly at four o'clock; please be on time." These were the first words spoken to me by an unknown professor as I entered her class at five minutes past four. I hastily found an empty seat, for I wanted to know who this woman was. A thick syllabus lay on the desk and provided me with the information I sought. Her name: Dr. Kathleen Lane.
I was a senior in college and all I wanted to do was breeze through my final semester. After listening to Dr. Lane's first lecture, thumbing through the syllabus, and learning of student expectations, I realized my hopes for an easy semester were quickly crushed. I glanced back at Dr. Lane after this epiphany and thought her my nemesis.
Maybe it was her passion for special education or her knowledgeable insight about behavioral disorders. It could have been her advocacy for special ed. students or fear of being late to class again, but after only a few lectures, I found myself literally running and looking forward to class. Her quirky spirits, friendly demeanor, and exhuberant energy had lured me in.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Lane on numerous research projects. Working with Dr. Lane is, of course, a learning experience, but also an honor and privilege. She amazes me with her continuously evolving knowledge in the field of special ed. and epitomizes multi-tasking. Her ability to juggle research projects, college classes, attend conferences, and raise a family is nothing short of miraculous. Because Dr. Lane loves what she does, she always puts forth her best effort in all that she does and succeeds. She is an inspiration.
Today, I continue to look towards Dr. Lane for career advice, life advice, or if I'm just in the mood for some laughter. I no longer consider her my nemesis, but rather...my personal best friend."
"Dr. Lane is an intelligent, passionate, and professional woman who takes pride in mentoring her students. She is very approachable, has a down-to-earth personality, and truly cares about her pupils. I have been mentored by her for the past few years and she continues to inspire and enlighten me today. Kathleen is wealth of knowledge and a gift to education."
